Federal funding to help make SCCC workforce greener

Green energy jobs in Brentwood just got a $200,000 boost in federal funding, announced Monday at a ceremony at Suffolk County Community College’s Brentwood campus.

Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) joined acting SCCC president George Gatta Jr. to explain the new “Green Technology Workforce Initiative” designed to help students and local entrepreneurs near the campus in developing new energy projects.

Specifically, the federal funding will be used for a Spanish Entrepreneurial Assistance Program, a conference on “green business” opportunities, and a summer camp for young entrepreneurs interested in green technologies.

The funding was pushed by Israel into a larger appropriations bill that President Barack Obama signed into law last month.

“Turning our economy around depends on our ability to create new careers in growing industries,” Israel said. “Suffolk County Community College’s Green Technology Workforce Initiative will help expand green businesses, train a green workforce and ensure that we excel in the energy sector right here on Long Island.”
