Less than 24 hours after it was announced that Florida's Urban Meyer would step down due to health reasons, Meyer changed his mind and will take a leave of absence.
Meyer will not step down and will return as head coach of the Gators at some point. He will coach the team in Friday's Sugar Bowl against Cincinnati. Offensive coordinator Steve Addazio will be the interim head coach while Meyer takes his time away from the program.
"During the past couple of days I was offered and encouraged to take a leave of absence," Meyer said. "I've accepted this offer to improve on my health."
Meyer, 45, said the reason for his change of heart was the players. Meyer was back on the field with the Gators on Sunday morning in preparation for the Sugar Bowl.
In five seasons as Florida's head coach, Meyer is 56-10 with the Gators, including a 32-8 mark in SEC play.
