Hofstra wrestler Russell Benner has been suspended from the team for an insensitive comment he made on Twitter, wrestling coach Rob Anspach announced Thursday, and will be required by the school to perform community service.

Benner’s comments, regarding the Penn State child sexual abuse case, were posted last weekend, when the Hofstra team was competing at Penn State. The school also said that Benner, a junior, sent letters of apology to the presidents of Penn State and Hofstra.

“We want to apologize to all those affected and offended by Russell’s comments,” Hofstra athletic director Jeff Hathaway said in a statement. “We certainly do not condone this type of behavior from our student-athletes.”

In June, former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was convicted of 45 counts of sexually abusing 10 young boys, and sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison in October.

“Hofstra University has provided formal educational seminars on the proper use of social media,” Hathaway said, “and will continue to stress the importance of responsibility when utilizing the many different social media platforms available.”
