Messina, Mendoza come up big
as Dowling sweeps in softball
Danielle Messina had a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh and lifted Dowling to a 3-2 win over Southern Connecticut State in Game 1 of a non-conference doubleheader yesterday.
Felicia Mendoza struck out 15 in a five-hitter and Kristen Weeks provided the only offense with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fourth as Dowling (7-9) completed the sweep with a 1-0 win.
C.W. Post sweeps. Shannon Kulnis belted a three-run home run in the first inning and Kerry Fisher went 2-for-2 with an RBI and three runs as C.W. Post cruised to an 11-1 win over Queens in the first game of an ECC doubleheader. Nicole Capella went 2-for-3 as Post (11-5, 2-0) completed the sweep with an 8-0 victory. Queens is 4-9, 0-2.Baseball
Suffolk CC-Brentwood 11, Bronx CC 2: Ryan Bresnahan struck out 10 and allowed three hits and no earned runs for Suffolk CC (9-1) in Region XV. Alex Angus went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored in the win.
C.W. Post 8, Dowling 2:Nick Compito went 3-for-4 with at triple and two runs and Bobby Kay allowed two runs in seven innings to lead C.W. post (7-6-1, 5-1 ECC). Dowling is 9-7, 4-2.
New Haven 8, Adelphi 5:New Haven (14-3, 3-1 Northeast-10) scored five runs in the top of the ninth, including a two-run single by Jordan Kershaw to put it ahead 6-5. Chris Weidlein went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and Jonathan Gonzalez struck out 12 in seven innings in a no-decision as Adelphi fell to 13-6, 2-2.Briarcliffe 20, Lehman College 0: Reggie Smith went 4-for-6 with six RBIs and Sam Braverman had a home run to lead Briarcliffe (8-5) in non-conference.USMMA 14, CCNY 3:Don Occhipinti went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs and Alex Wolfe went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead USMMA (3-7) in non-conference.
