The No. 1 LSU Tigers have suspended cornerback Tyrann Mathieu, running back Spencer Ware and defensive back Tharold Simon for one game, according to numerous reports.
The Tigers (7-0, 4-0 SEC) host Auburn on Saturday.
ESPN reported the Mathieu and Ware suspensions, while sources told the AP Simon would be banned for one game. Mathieu and Ware failed drug tests, according to the LSU student newspaper, the Daily Reveille.
The suspensions couldn’t have come at a worse time for LSU, which was ranked the No. 1 team in the first BCS poll released on Sunday. Auburn (5-2, 3-1) is riding high after a 17-6 home win over Florida.
Mathieu has been a star on defense with two interceptions, four forced fumbles, two touchdowns and 42 tackles. Ware is LSU’s top rusher with 512 yards and six touchdowns.
In an unrelated story, the SEC suspended Georgia nose guard Kwame Geathers and Shawn Williams for the first half of the Bulldogs next game on Oct. 29 against Florida. The players were suspended for actions committed during a win against Vanderbilt last Saturday.
Commodores’ center Logan Stewart was also suspended for half a game. He’ll miss the first half of Vanderbilt’s game against Army.
