Stony Brook scored all three times it touched the ball in the third quarter to complete a burst of 34 points in a span of 18:02, starting in the second quarter. Brock Jackolski scored on a 1-yard run at the end of a 66-yard drive, and then, the Seawolves put together two lightning-quick, three-play drives for TDs.
After a fumble recovery gave Stony Brook the ball at Southern's 41-yard line, Miguel Maysonet went 9 yards to score. The next drive began with a 29-yard run by Jackolski and ended two plays later with a beautiful 35-yard screen pass from quarterback Michael Coulter to Maysonet. Coulter paid for it by taking a ferocious hit just after he let go, but his courage made the play and gave SBU a 34-7 lead.
Southern came back to drive 60 yards to score on a 3-yard run by DeMarcus Moon. But Stony Brook responded with a 73-yard drive for a 25-yard Coulter-to-Jordan Gush TD pass and a 41-14 lead with 10:49 remaining.
