Pittsburgh names Michael Haywood as head coach

Pittsburgh named Michael Haywood as its new head coach on Thursday. Haywood replaces Dave Wannstedt, who was fired after the Panthers had a 7-5 record.

Wannstedt, who did not lead Pittsburgh to a BCS bowl in his six seasons, remains at Pittsburgh as a special assistant to the athletic director.

Haywood led Miami (Ohio) to the Mid-American Conference title this season with a 9-4 record. He was 1-11 in his first season as a head coach at Miami (Ohio) in 2009.

Among his coaching stops, Haywood was a running backs coach and special teams coordinator at LSU, running backs coach and special teams coordinator at Texas, and served as offensive coordinator under Charlie Weis at Notre Dame.

"I'm looking forward to the challenges and opportunities we will have as we work to achieve our goal of a Big East championship," Haywood said during his press conference on Thursday.
