St. John’s guard Shamorie Ponds was named Big East Player of the Week, the league office annouced Monday.

Ponds scored 31 points and had five rebounds, five assists and a career-high six steals in the Red Storm’s 73-68 loss to No. 6 Xavier on Tuesday at Carnesecca Arena. The sophomore guard became the 51st member of St. John’s 1,000-point club during the second half.

In their second game of the week, Ponds put up 33 points, seven rebounds and four steals in an 81-77 upset win over No. 4 Duke on Saturday at Madison Square Garden.

It’s Ponds’ first player of the week award after being named the Big East Rookie of the Week five times last season.
