The Atlantic 10 will play the 2013 women’s tournament championship at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday, March 16, the league announced Thursday. The first three rounds will be played at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.
The A-10 women’s tournament title game will be played on the same day as the men’s semifinal and will be broadcast on ESPN networks. The top 12 teams in the conference will advance to the tournament. It’s a big step for the A-10, which has made moves to expand its profile. The league recently added Butler and VCU.
“We have made a commitment to further strengthen the Atlantic 10 as one of the premier women’s basketball conferences in Division I,” stated A-10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. “Without a doubt, relocating our championship game to Barclays Center is a key move in that commitment. It gives our top teams exceptional exposure on one of the biggest stages in the world. We are excited about showcasing A-10 women’s basketball in Brooklyn in March.”
It will be the first women’s game played at the Barclays Center.
“Barclays Center is proud to announce its first women’s basketball game,” said Sean Saadeh, Vice President of Programming for Barclays Center. “Our venue’s inaugural season will offer a strong lineup of college basketball, culminating with the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships for both the men and women.”
