West Virginia, Nebraska win rivalry games

West Virginia not only beat Pittsburgh 35-10 in the Backyard Brawl. The Mountaineers likely took the Panthers out of BCS bowl contention on Friday afternoon in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh (6-5, 4-2 in the Big East) came into the game 4-1 in the Big East and simply needed to win out to gain the conference's automatic BCS bid. Instead, West Virginia and Connecticut are the two teams battling for the Big East title.

Connecticut needs to win its final two games to clinch the Big East title and BCS bowl bid. The Huskies hold both tie-breakers against West Virginia and Pittsburgh. West Virginia can win the Big East by winning out and having Connecticut lose a game.

West Virginia (8-3, 4-2) led 14-7 at hafltime and put the game away in third quarter with Geno Smith hitting Tavon Austin twice on touchdown passes. Smith completed just 9 of 12 passes, but had 212 yards and three touchdowns, The Mountaineers held Pittsburgh to just 78 rushing yards.

Pittsburgh couldn't overcome four critical turnovers.

Nebraska (10-2, 6-2 in the Big 12) clinched the Big 12 North title and spot in the conference championship game next Saturday with a 45-17 win over Colorado. It was the final game between the schools as members of the Big 12. Nebraska wiil move to the Big Ten and Colorado will move to the Pac-10 next season.

Starting quarterback Taylor Martinez sat out with an ankle injury. Cody Green stepped in and threw for two touchdowns. Running back Rex Burkhead also threw for two touchdowns and ran for 101 yards and another touchdown.
