Davis' Goal in OT Boosts MetroStars

Columbus, Ohio - Rookie Brad Davis scored his first career goal in the

seventh minute of overtime, giving the MetroStars a 2-1 victory over the Crew

in an MSL game last night.

Crew defender Todd Yeagly blocked two close-range shots from Diego Serna

before the ball squirted free for Davis, whose left-footed blast deflected off

traffic in front into the top of the net.

"I had several opportunities to score in the game, but I could not put it

away against Columbus," the 20-year-old Davis said after scoring in his second

career MLS game. "When I saw the ball bounce away from Serna and the defenders,

I had enough time to fire a shot hard enough past the defense and goalkeeper.

I am excited about scoring a goal, but even more excited for the three points

after a very tough game."

The overtime session was the first in the 22-game series between the clubs.

Columbus (1-2) played a man down the final 24 minutes after Daniel Torres

was issued a red card for pulling the back of Serna's jersey on his run to

goal.

The MetroStars' Rodrigo Faria tied it in the 69th minute on a one-timer

from short range after a deft through ball from Petter Villegas.

The MetroStars (2-1) avoided being shut out for the third consecutive game

against the Crew.

Columbus, which lost only one regular-season game at home last season, has

lost twice at Columbus Crew Stadium and didn't record its first shot on goal

until the 46th minute.

The Crew's Dante Washington scored his first of the season on a breakaway

in the 58th minute to open the scoring. A tackle by John Harkes at midfield

popped the ball loose to Columbus' John Wilmar Perez, who sent Washington in

alone on goalkeeper Tim Howard. Still, Howard got his first win in five games

against the Crew.
