E. Islip Edges Bellport in Series Opener

Paul D'Agostino's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh

inning scored Dominic Sciuba to give East Islip a 4-3 win yesterday in

the opener of a three-game series with Bellport. The series matches two

of the three teams battling for the League III championship. West Islip

is also in contention.

Sciuba was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a groundout.

After a walk to Mark Taormina and a wild pitch, Mike Messner was walked

intentionally to load the bases. D'Agostino then drove in the winning


"The whole game was like that," East Islip coach Sal Ciampi said.

"Both teams took advantage of the other team's mistakes. The two

pitchers could have easily been going into the seventh tied 1-1."

Jason Gouge struck out 10 batters for East Islip (9-1). Ciampi said

he would bring Gouge into the third game of the series if he needed to

get a couple of outs. Roberto Cancel took the loss.

"This is a very big series for all three teams," he said. "If it's

close enough, I'm sure we'll bring him back. He has a very resilient


In other League III games, Billy Small went 1-for-3 with three RBI

and Matt Greene went 1-for-3 with two RBI for West Islip (8-3) in its

10-7 win over Whitman (5-5) . . . Bobby Alpi's sacrifice fly in the top

of the third inning gave North Babylon (2-8) a 7-6 lead en route to its

12-6 win over Copiague (2-11). Sean Leahy struck out 15 in seven

innings, and Justin Walter went 4-for-5.


Longwood 10, Sachem 1: Scott Kittilsen pitched a three-hitter and had

eight strikeouts to lift Longwood (9-4). Kittilsen also scored three

runs. Mike Herbst went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI. Sachem is 3-7.

Smithtown 4, Ward Melville 3: Tim Lynaugh had a basesloaded, one-out

single to score Greg Terebetski in the seventh. Lynaugh went 3-for-3

with one RBI and a run scored. Keith Tartamella's two-out double tied it

3-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Garrick had nine strikeouts for

Commack 11, Bay Shore 9: Ryan Flaim was 3-for-3 with four runs

scored and Andrew Korin was 3-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run

single to cap a three-run fifth as Commack took a 10-7 lead. The Cougars

(6-4) trailed 7-2 in the third, but scored five runs in the fourth to

tie the score at 7. Scott Hession and Michael Schneider each had three

West Babylon 9, Huntington 7: Timmy Smith's single in the bottom of

the sixth drove in Kyle Rienzo to give West Babylon (7-3) an 8-7 lead

and its seventh win in a row. Rob Sandora hit a grand slam for the

Cold Spring Harbor 16, Wheatley 10: Dave Shepherd hit a two-run double

in the bottom of the sixth to give Cold Spring Harbor a 12-10 lead. Dan

Osterman tied it with a two-run single earlier in the inning. Bryan

Marto went 3-for-4 with three runs scored for the Seahawks (5-4).

Long Island Lutheran 12, Packer 11: Gary Needham (4-for-5) scored the

winning run in the bottom of the seventh when Jon McBean walked with the

bases loaded. The Crusaders (6-1) fought back from an 11-2 deficit after

two innings. Winning pitcher Dave Rodriguez relieved in the second

inning and retired 15 in a row, striking out 11. Packer is 3-4. WP -

Sayville 16, Central Islip 3: John McGorty went 4-for-5 with a triple

and four RBI, and T.J. Brocking hit a solo homer in the fourth for

Mary Joe Malone doubled and scored when a bunt was misplayed with

no outs in the top of the seventh, giving Southampton a 3-2 win over

Hauppauge in a Division III game. Liz Ott had two RBI for Southampton

(8-1), and her triple in the fifth tied the score at 2. Holly Cronin hit

an RBI triple in the fourth as Hauppauge (5-3) took a 2-1 lead. Garrette

Glinton struck out five and allowed six hits for the Mariners, who

suffered their only loss of the year to Hauppauge, 11-9 in 11 innings on

April 12. Krystal Irwin took the loss for Hauppauge.


Brentwood 5, Centereach 2: April Robinson went 2-for-3 with two runs

scored to lead Brentwood (7-2). Jillian Barra pitched a three-hitter and
