Newsday NFL columnist Bob Glauber was named the 2011 New York Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

It is the first NSSA award for Glauber. The NSSA will honor Glauber and the other 2011 winners at an awards banquet in June.

"Bob has so much passion, knowledge and talent," Newsday sports editor Hank Winnicki said. "His columns are insightful, well-written and well-reported. His blogs and tweets are entertaining and informative. The honor is well-deserved."

Glauber has been Newsday's NFL columnist since 1992. He covered the Giants, Jets and NFL for Newsday from 1989-91. Glauber covered the Giants and Islanders from 1985-88 for Gannett Westchester-Rockland Newspapers, and was The Sporting News' national football columnist from 1993-96.

Glauber was also honored in the summer, sweeping the top three spots in the sports column category in the New York State Associated Press contest.

He has been honored numerous times by the Professional Football Writers of America.
