Wide receiver Braylon Edwards had hoped to sign a lucrative contract with the Jet before the 2011 season, but his contract demands - coupled with the Jets' interest in Plaxico Burress - left him on the outside looking in.

Edwards wound up signing just a one-year deal for close to the veteran minimum with the 49ers, but even those plans haven't worked out. Edwards announced on his website today that he has been released by San Francico because of ongoing problems related to knee surgery earlier this season.

"I was released today by the 49ers due to my injury that required more time to rehab and hasn’t allowed me to re-sync with the offense," Edwards wrote. "I wish the 49ers organization the best of luck during the Playoffs. I will be working hard this off season to strengthen my knee and prepare for the 2012 season. Thanks for your continued support and for being such loyal fans."
