TAMPA, Fla. -- Carolina's Cam Newton is inactive for Sunday's season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because of a hairline fracture in his ribs.
The two-time Pro Bowl quarterback was injured during the Panthers' third preseason game and was limited in practice last week. He didn't miss a game in his first three NFL seasons.
Derek Anderson will start for the defending NFC champion Panthers, who tied a franchise record with 12 victories in 2013.
Receiver Brenton Bersin, safety Tre Boston, tackle David Foucault, guard Andrew Norwell, tight end Brandon Williams and defensive end Kony Ealy are Carolina's other inactives.
Defensive linemen Da'Quan Bowers and William Gholston, cornerback Rashaan Melvin, safety Bradley McDougald, tackle Kevin Pamphile and guards Rishaw Johnson and Kadeem Edwards are inactive for Tampa Bay.
