Cam Newton, the Panthers' No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft, will get his No. 1 start on Friday against the Dolphins.
Now it remains to be seen whether Newton will continue as the starter over Jimmy Clausen. It was Clausen who started the preseason opener against the Giants on Saturday, with Newton replacing him in the second quarter.
Head coach Ron Rivera said he hasn't made up his mind which quarterback will be his starter in the regular season opener against Arizona. The first-year coach also said it was his plan all along to start the first-year quarterback this week.
"We're going to go with Cam. Pretty much, it's just following the line of what we had planned throughout training camp and that was to go back and forth back and forth with our guys. It's a good opportunity," Rivera said, per Roy Green of the Charlotte Observer.
"The (first-team) offense will play their half. Cam will start off with them," Rivera said. "Jimmy will come in and play with that same group of guys in the second quarter. We're doing like we did last week where Cam came in and played with that group in the second quarter. We want to make sure everybody gets an opportunity to play. We think it's important to keep that competition going.
"If people do want to read into it, that's fine but just know we have a plan and we're sticking to it as we go through this process. As I said, sometime next week we'd like to have a real good feel for what we're going to do as we go into the regular season."
