With the NFL going to a three-day draft, there is a potentially interesting scenario that could have an effect on the Saints with the 32nd and final pick of the first round.
Unlike previous years, only the first round of the draft will be held (Thursday night, April 22) in the new format. The Saints are scheduled to pick 32nd and last in the round, leading to a question of whether or not the Saints could pass on the pick and then field potential trade offers the rest of that night and into the next day in advance of the second round.
But according to the rules, the Saints wouldn't be allowed to do so. If time expires on the clock before they make their pick, the team with the first pick in the second round — in this case the Rams — would be permitted to jump ahead of the Saints and make the selection.
