Add another team to the list of those barking up the Perry Fewell tree.
The 49ers have requested permission to interview the Giants' defensive coordinator, according to a league source. That makes three teams with head coaching openings that have shown interest: The Browns and Panthers have also come knocking.
My sense is that Fewell would be uncomfortable being a Rooney Rule candidate, just interviewing to help a team fulfill minority requirements without a legitimate shot at the head coaching job. What makes this 49ers request intriguing (and dangerous for the Giants if they fear losing Fewell) is that the team has reportedly already asked to interview another minority candidate, Hue Jackson of the Raiders.
Fewell's defense led the NFL in turnovers this season, which is one of the big things he was brought to New York to accomplish. They finished 7th in overall defense based on yardage allowed, but were 16th in points allowed per game. Fewell makes an intriguing candidate for a head coaching job because he has experience as the interim head coach of the Bills in the second half of 2009.
The Giants might end up getting those coaching changes that they said they wouldn't be making afterall.
