Rookie defensive tackle Marvin Austin sat out last night’s practice and will miss tonight’s as well with a sore hip flexor. But he’s still hoping to play in the preseason opener at the end of the week. That game will take place in a state where they are very familiar with Austin: North Carolina.

Austin was one of the suspended Tar Heels players last season and he did not play as a senior. It will be interesting to see if he gets any kind of response from the crowd of Carolinians on Saturday night. For that to happen, though, he has to get on the field.

“It should be pretty soon,” he said. “I think we’ll give it another day.”

He said he felt his hip cramp up on him during practice on Saturday and when he came out of his stance it tightened up on him. Given that Austin has not played organized football in almost two years, it’s understandable that he would have some kind of physical glitch as he dives into the NFL.

“I didn’t think so, but I haven’t played in a while,” he said. “I was just getting used to it again and making sure I take care of my body to the best of my ability. But I feel really good right now.”
