Barden: Receiver injuries are "crazy" and "disheartening"

Steve Smith wasn’t available in today’s locker room session, but another receiver who is on injured reserve was. I asked Ramses Barden about having five receivers with season-ending injuries this year, beginning in the spring with Domenik Hixon and going all the way up to today with Smith.

“I don’t know,” he said, shaking his head. “Must be something in the water. It’s tough out here for Giants wideouts.”

Derek Hagan, who has benefited from the injuries, said it’s not all that unusual for one position group to be hit by injuries. He pointed to last year’s Giants who suffered multiple injuries at defensive back.

That’s easy for Hagan to say because he’s still playing. Barden wasn’t thinking in such broad terms.

“It’s crazy,” he said. “Everybody is so competitive and nobody wants to be forced off the field. I imagine there will come a time when we can laugh about it. But right now it’s disheartening. We all wish we could be out there helping each other.”

That time to laugh? I suggested that maybe the flight home from Dallas in February would work. Barden shook his head.

“That’s going to be tough,” he said. “Even with a Super Bowl ring, that’d still be tough.”
