Corey Webster (groin) practiced a few snaps on Wednesday but was sidelined on Thursday. Aaron Ross (back) hasn’t practiced all week. Jayron Hosley (hamstring) will probably won’t play on Sunday.

The Giants are running out of healthy cornerbacks. If none of those three can play on Sunday, Trumaine McBride might wind up starting opposite Prince Amukamara. The team does have Terrell Thomas, who has played the slot and can be bounced outside, but there is practically no depth at the position.

Unless, of course, they elevate someone from the practice squad. Someone like Charles James.

The rookie came close to making the 53-man roster out of training camp and has been with the team for the first month. There seems to be a good chance that on Saturday he’ll be elevated to the active roster and on the field Sunday against the Eagles.

“If my name is called, hopefully I’m able to do anything I can to help contribute,” he said today.

So far his name hasn’t been called, but Perry Fewell said the guys on the field have been playing well in practice, and that includes James. Tom Coughlin said there are two or three versions of the defensive backfield that they’ve been working with this week. Perhaps James will be in one of those versions.

If James does get the promotion, it will all happen quickly. There won’t be much time to enjoy it. A quick phone call to friends and family and then straight to work.

“It’s one of those things, you have to take it in at that moment and then let it go,” he said of preparing for the call. “It sounds crazy, but you may have to come back to it later and relive it.”

James spoke this preseason about his journey to the NFL.

“Just to be able to put on that uniform in a live game on a Sunday would be unreal for me,” he said. “It was surreal for me in the preseason games, so being out on a Sunday during the regular season, as a little kid you dream for that moment. It’ll be big. It’ll definitely be emotional, but after I come out of that tunnel it’s down to business.”

If he comes out of the tunnel. He might just be watching on TV with the rest of the practice squad guys.

“Hopefully those guys will come back and get healthy,” James said. “If not, then I’ll be ready to fill in if called.”
