Coughlin monitoring Irene

Tom Coughlin said yesterday that he had had his “head in the sand” regarding news accounts of Hurricane Irene heading straight for New York. Today he said that he’s a little more on top of things, but so far the reports he’s been seeing are calling for only showers in the timeframe during which the game will be played (roughly 2-5 p.m. on Saturday).

“If it becomes more than showers it’ll definitely affect the game,” Coughlin said. “We’ll play the game the way it’s been planned to be played, but if the weather does give us a problem we’ll make the adjustment.”

That could mean yanking the starters before he is planning on, which is right around halftime.

The other issue for the Giants could come after the game. While Coughlin told his players at a meeting this morning that they should go home after the game, there’s a chance they won’t be able to. If some New Jersey communities are evacuated, the players could be stuck.

“We have hotel rooms available,” Coughlin said. “Players without residence are still in the hotel. Other guys have been offered hotel rooms if something does take place and they have to get out of Hoboken or Edgewater or wherever.”
