Apparently young Mr. Wilson has been getting an earful – or an eyeful or an inbox-ful or something – from the outside world over his two-fumble performance against the Cowboys.

So he returned serve on Twitter today:

I had to look up the term “Ayy” online. Well, it’s not good. And nothing productive ever comes from taunting fans, no matter how [angry] they are. (Fantasy football folks, however, are fair game.)

Of course Wilson isn’t the first player to hear these kinds of things from the general public. And neither was Victor Cruz when it happened to him after he dropped a key third-down pass against the Redskins in the 2011 opener. Back then Cruz was one of the few athletes involved with social media, and that open door allowed folks to barge in and insult him with some rather nasty taunts.

I asked Cruz about that today when we spoke at his Point of Light award presentation this morning.

“Obviously Giants fans are very vocal and at the time they weren’t as thrilled with my performance that day as I had hoped,” Cruz said. “They let me hear their opinions via Twitter and Facebook and things like that. But shortly after I started to do better, and those things change. People are going to say what they’re going to say, good bad or indifferent. We have to be able to work through that.”
