Diehl, Smith must wait another week for return

All the optimism and promise of the week will have to wait another week in regard to the returns of David Diehl and Steve Smith. Diehl did seem to be the closer to returning, having practiced all week on a limited basis. But both he and Smith were listed as doubtful and are two of the inactives today.

Expect both of them to be ready to play next week in Minnesota. In fact, it's possible that the Giants could have those two plus Hakeem Nicks and Shaun O'Hara back for that game. Possible. My informed instinct tells me that Nicks will be back for the Eagles game.

The rest of the Giants’ inactives are the four who were already ruled out – O’Hara, Will Blackmon, Nicks and Shawn Andrews – along with two coaches’ decision scratches in Duke Calhoun and Linval Joseph.

The Giants might have made Calhoun inactive just so Antrel Rolle wouldn’t get upset if he did something well and the crowd yelled “Duuuke!” Best to avoid any confusion at all at this point in the season.

Interesting that Calhoun is down while newcomer receivers Michael Clayton and Devin Thomas are up. Expect Thomas to have a big role on special teams this week, while Clayton seems to have become increasingly comfortable with the offense. The Giants also have both Gerris Wilkinson and Phillip Dillard active in the same game for the first time.

A couple of interesting inactives for the Redskins today as well. Running back Ryan Torain is out, leaving rookie Keiland Williams as the starter. And Albert Haynesworth is not playing. He missed practice with an illness on Friday and, according to this report, is healthy enough to play today but isn’t.
