Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz has become a household name after a breakout 2011 season. Here are 10 fun facts about the wide receiver.
Cruz grew up a Cowboys fan in his hometown of Paterson, N.J. He was raised by his mother, Blanca.
Despite signing a letter of intent to play at the University of Massachusetts in 2004, Cruz was academically ineligible and had to attend Bridgton Academy in Maine before attending college.
Cruz was ruled academically ineligible in 2006 for UMass and was kicked out of school. He enrolled in Passaic County Community College in New Jersey and was accepted back to UMass in 2007.
While at the UMass, Cruz finished fourth in career receptions (131) and fifth in receiving yardage (1,958). Those numbers are even more impressive when you take into account that he didn’t become a full-time starter until his junior year.
Cruz was named a first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association wide receiver in 2008 and 2009.
Former UMass teammate Vladimir Ducasse was picked up by the Jets in the second round of the 2010 draft while Cruz went undrafted.
Cruz became a household name during a preseason game against the Jets in 2010 when he caught 6 passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns. The performance caught the eye of LeBron James who tweeted “Victor Cruz going nuts on the Jets tonight on #MNF. Undrafted rookie from UMass. He’s gonna have a job this year for sure.”
After every touchdown, Cruz breaks out a salsa dance in the end zone. Cruz told Fox News Latino about where he learned the moves. "My grandmother, when I was growing up, you know how they would always put that music on during the weekends, she would grab me up and we would start dancing,"
Cruz, born on Nov. 11, shares a birthday with Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, actor Leonardo DiCaprio and actress Demi Moore.
His 99-yard touchdown catch against the Jets in Week 16 was the longest play in franchise history. It was also the longest touchdown catch against the Jets in franchise history. In that same game, Cruz broke Amani Toomer's franchise record for single-season receiving yards (1,343).
