If the Giants beat Washington on Sunday, they will clinch third place in the NFC East. While that bronze medal offers little other than the contentment of not finishing last, like most decisions and actions around the Giants these days it will affect next season.
The Giants' 2015 schedule has them facing, besides their division foes, teams from the NFC South and the AFC East along with games against corresponding teams from the NFC West and NFC North. In other words, if the Giants finish in third place they play the third-place team from those last two divisions. Right now that would mean a home game against the 49ers and a visit to play the Vikings. That could change, though. While neither of those teams is likely to move up, the 49ers are only a game ahead of the Rams in the standings and the Vikings are just a game ahead of the Bears. And there is certainly no guarantee that the Giants win on Sunday or that they ultimately finish ahead of Washington.
Who says these games are meaningless?
