Giants D ready for its role in Jets' quarterback battle

It’s interesting that the Giants will apparently have a big say in the direction of the Jets’ regular season. With rookie Geno Smith getting his audition against Big Blue on Saturday and the Jets’ starting job still up for grabs, the Giants know that the way they play against Smith will go a long way in determining his readiness.

“Maybe I’ll get a call from Sanchez tonight,” Justin Tuck chuckled.

But the Giants have enough of their own problems, on defense particularly, to not worry too much about the Jets’ decision-making and worry about their play-making.

“He’s going to come out and do whatever is in his power to make a splash so, we have to be ready to play,” Tuck said of Smith. “This will be a great opportunity for him to win or lose a job so I know he’s going to be on his P’s and Q’s and we have to be the same way. We have to expect anything from a game like this … Regardless of what quarterback is in there it all starts with stopping the running game and then hopefully getting him in some situations where he has to make some reads that he’s not comfortable with.”

As for the rest of the Giants, well, they didn’t seem very interested in the Smith-Sanchez dynamic. Eli Manning was asked about Smith, and quickly turned the question to his own team.

“We have a rookie quarterback also,” he said of Ryan Nassib. “I’ve been working with him and this week things seem simple and all of a sudden, it’s Jet week and you get a lot of different looks in their personnel and alignments. For the rookies there’s a lot going on and a lot of things can get blended in together. You just try to work with them and teach them and get some plays that they feel comfortable with and get them in a good rhythm.”
