Jon Beason appears to be on track to return for opening day.

The middle linebacker who sprained his knee in the Jaguars game was spotted running the past two days on fields adjacent to the team's practices. On Monday, he was working with a weighted sled to add resistance, then on Tuesday, he was working more on agility and cutting.

"He feels better," Tom Coughlin said. "He's got a routine now, and they get a little bit more aggressive each day with it. So he's optimistic, let's put it that way."

Coughlin, though, hardened by injuries throughout training camp, has a believe-it-when-he-sees-it attitude.

"He's optimistic," Coughlin said. "Whatever they tell me."

Beason will not play in Thursday's preseason finale against the Patriots.
