Darian Thompson’s rookie season is over.
The Giants safety will undergo surgery to repair a foot injury that has sidelined him since Week 2 and was placed on injured reserve. Thompson, a third-round pick from Boise State, won the starting safety job in training camp but a shoulder injury kept him out of the lineup in the opener (though he played extensively) and he started just one game in Week 2 against the Saints. He played 88 defensive snaps in the two games.
The Giants move forward with Landon Collins, Andrew Adams and Nat Berhe at the position.
Taking Thompson’s place on the 53-man roster is OL Adam Gettis, who was promoted from the practice squad. He was brought up to give the Giants an extra interior lineman as they move forward for the next few weeks without starting left guard Justin Pugh.
If the Giants were excited, disappointed, or even surprised by the results of Tuesday’s presidential election, they certainly did not show it.
“No reaction,” Eli Manning said of Donald Trump’s victory. “Woke up this morning, saw it and went to work. Started getting ready for Cincinnati.”
S Landon Collins said he watched a movie and got a massage instead of watching the election.
“It is what it is,” he said. “I hope he does a great job.”
Ben McAdoo did address the result in a team meeting and the Giants certainly shared some chatter about it among themselves just like every other workplace in America likely did.
“But did it distract us from our job? No,” RB Rashad Jennings said.
The Giants are the only team in the NFL with two rookie receivers with at least two TD catches each in Sterling Shepard and Roger Lewis Jr. In fact, both caught TD passes in the game on Sunday against the Eagles. It was the first time in a Giants game with non-replacement players that has happened since Ken MacAfee and Bob Topp did it at Philadelphia in 1954 . . . The Giants signed WRs Kevin Norwood and Da’Ron Brown to their practice squad after Geremy Davis was signed by the Chargers and in anticipation of not having a fully healthy Victor Cruz (ankle) for workouts this week.
