CINCINNATI -- Corey Washington will be looking to defend his unofficial title as preseason MVP of the Giants when they open against the Bengals on Friday. And this time, the wide receiver isn't just hoping to get on the regular-season roster at the end of the summer. He wants to get on the field.
"This preseason will be as big for me as it was last year," he said. "I have to go out and do not just what I did last year, but more."
More? Washington said he was referring to his technique. Running more precise routes. Getting better separation. The finer points of being a receiver.
"I'm not going to sit here and say I'm going to score four touchdowns like I did last year in the preseason," he said. "But I can play at a high level like I did."
Last year he caught the league by surprise. He was a kid from tiny Division II Newberry College, undrafted, virtually unnoticed until the Hall of Fame Game performance. As the touchdowns kept coming, he was hearing the voices of fans calling for his place on the roster.
This year he expects a different echo.
"It probably gonna be more like 'Let this kid play' and stuff like that," Washington said.
Ideally it will be.
Randle sits out
WR Rueben Randle said transitioning from the grass at the Giants' training camp practices to the grass at the Bengals' facility outside Paul Brown Stadium irritated the tendinitis in his right knee, causing him to sit out the last parts of Tuesday's workout and miss Wednesday's.
"It was just the change of surface," Randle said. "It kind of bothered me a little bit, but it's nothing serious. I'm fine."
Randle said he's been dealing with the tendinitis since high school and expects to play on Friday.
Giants DE Brad Bars wrestled RB Jeremy Hill to the ground and Hill threw the ball at Bars, but Bars walked away. That was as close as anyone came to an altercation in the two-day joint practice . . . Backup MLB Unai Unga made a nice play to break up a pass to Bengals TE Tyler Eifert . . . Tom Coughlin said the starters will play a series or two in the preseason opener.
