One of the most disappointing aspects of the 2009 Giants defense was its inability to reach the quarterback. Now the guy in charge of the players who were supposed to get there and rack up the sacks is gone.
Tom Coughlin has dismissed popular defensive line coach Mike Waufle today, the Giants announced. He came to the team in 2004 with Coughlin and coached Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck to the Pro Bowl.
After 53 sacks as a team in 2007 the Giants dropped to 42 last year and 32 this season. The run defense also took a big step backwards in 2009. After a season in which a supposed strength of the team became a weakness, Waufle followed defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan out the door. Sheridan, of course, was fired on Monday.
Is the dismissal purely about production or are the Giants clearing the path for a new 3-4 defensive system? Probably a lot more of the former. It's a production-based business and if you don't get the job done, you're out. Still, it gives the Giants options.
The Giants aren’t only about subtracting these days, though. They added three players to their roster: DB Courtney Brown, FB Jerome Johnson and K Sam Swank.
