I remembered the connection between Tom Coughlin, Romeo Crennel and Eric Mangini. But because I'm a bit of a nerd for storing quotes (you never know when you'll need someone's take on something) and my hard drive will undoubtedly wind up starring on an episode of Hoarders one day, I was able to find this.
It's the exact quote from the Mangini press conference in which he talks about Tom Coughlin. It comes from the week leading up to the last Jets-Giants regular season meeting in October 2007.
"I haven't gotten to know him that well," Mangini said of Coughlin. "I met him a few times and then I sat next to him at Romeo's (Crennel) daughter's wedding. I got to spend some time with him there. He's a pretty funny guy. You don't know somebody until you get to know them, and I really enjoyed the time we got to spend in that situation. I thought he had a great sense of humor."
Mangini went on to acknowledge that Coughlin's public aura does not reflect that sense of humor.
"That is the unique thing about a public persona versus who a guy really is," he said. "My experience with him was great. I enjoyed it, and I've enjoyed talking to him in the offseason ... You know, maybe we'll be doing some things at the Improv. I don't know. Coughlin and Mangini, one night only. Can we get that on pay-per-view? I think it's going to be big. You heard it here first."
What does this have to do with Crennel and the Giants' defensive coordinator search? Nothing I suppose. It's just one of those quirky little things we get to do on blogs.
Speaking fo which, I'm off to Cincy to cover the other guys for the weekend. I'll be back to see if any defensive coaches get their walking papers this afternoon, but I'm not expecting any news on the defensive coordinator front until next week. Maybe even the week after that.
