Amani Toomer said he’d take Tony Romo as his quarterback ahead of Eli Manning. El Manning has his own list of potential targets, it turns out.
When Manning saw Toomer in California earlier this month, he teased him about those comments, telling the Giants’ all-time leading receiver: “I thought Ike Hilliard and those (guys) were probably better Giants receivers than you were. Willie Ponder was probably a better Giants receiver than you were.”
Manning revealed that comeback this morning appearing on WFAN. In the past he’s been known to react a bit more harshly to criticism from former teammates who are now in the media (see: Tiki). But this one rolled right off Manning’s two Super Bowl rings.
“You have to laugh about it instead of getting upset,” Manning said. “There’s no point. Amani’s been a good pal of mine and still is, so you just have to laugh about it.”
As for all of the talk this offseason about Manning and the Giants, the quarterback said he doesn’t pay much attention to it.
“There’s a lot of talk and people are getting excited for the season,” he said. “It’s a long offseason, a lot of conversation … If you listen to every show and what every single person says about me or about the Giants and you get defensive about it or if it makes you upset, you’re going to have problems.”
By the way, here’s a comparison of the career stats of Amani Toomer and Willie Ponder while with the Giants:
While Ponder did not catch any TDs for the Giants, he did have one catch for a first down. Sadly, that was in 2003, the year before Eli Manning arrived to play for the Giants. Who knows what his numbers might have been had Manning been there for the majority of his Giants career?
