Hakeem Nicks will be practicing at full speed with the Giants today, the first time he’ll do that this season.
“Yep, big day,” Nicks said on the locker room this morning. “Get out there, practice, excited about that. I did a little bit of stuff last week, individual, that’s all they would let me do. So just today, I’ll get to do the reps with the team period, stuff like that.”
Nicks broke a bone in his right foot in May and required surgery. He came off the PUP list last week but had to wait for three practices before he could participate fully. He said he still expects to be limited in terms of reps today – probably about 50 percent he guessed – but he’ll be going full speed when he is on the field.
“I might have some fresh legs, that’s the good thing about it,” he said. “But I’m just excited to be back out there practicing with the team. I can’t wait to start going for real.”
He said he’d like to get some snaps in the preseason games before heading to to opener on Sept. 5. Of course, that could mean doing it on Friday against the Bears if he wants those snaps to be with Eli Manning. Last year Manning sat out the final preseason game and this year, with the opener just a week after the preseason finale and not the usual 9-10 days, there seems little chance he will play in that game against the Patriots.
Fellow receiver Victor Cruz, who has been holding down the position during the preseason, said he’s happy to welcome Nicks back.
“That’s my guy, man,” Cruz said. “He’s healthy again, his foot is right. I saw him out there when we were in Albany, running and doing all of the things he had to do to get on the field. Happy to have him back. He’s always around and we talk all the time, so it’s good to see him back on the field.”
