Osi Umenyiora is expected to be back on the practice field this week and could even play in the Giants’ game against the Eagles, although a return to game action the following week against the Cardinals seems more in the plans.
“We certainly hope Osi will be ready to go," Tom Coughlin said today. “We hope to have him on the practice field. Tomorrow is really not going to be a full-speed practice so it'll be Thursday before that takes place. But hopefully Thursday Osi will be ready to practice. If there's not any type of setback, I would expect that.”
Umenyiora sat on the sideline for most of training camp with an injury most figured was as fictitious as the one Deon Grant “suffered” against the Rams last night. He was seeking a trade or a new contract from the Giants, something he said was promised him by Jerry Reese. He returned to practice for several days in mid-August but his knee swelled up so he decided to have arthroscopic surgery. At the time Coughlin said he had hopes that Umenyiora might be ready for the opener but now it seems Week 4 is the plan.
Umenyiora was on a nearby field Friday working on getting out of a three-point stance and pass-rushing moves while the team practiced.
