Early in training camp, the Giants were willing to add some incentives to Osi Umenyiora's contract to make him happy. He did not accept them, though. Today he said why.
"It’s just not right," he said. "I made that mistake before. I signed something that at the time I thought was good but in retrospect it wasn’t right for me. I just know I can't make that same mistake again. I can't. Because if I do sign that then it seems like something has been done when in actuality nothing has been done. I’ll just take my chances and keep playing and see what happens."
Umenyiora said his relationship with Jerry Reese is OK, but it's clear they are not exactly chummy. Osi said that he and Jerry spoke about their disagreement over their conversation a few years ago which Umenyiora detailed in an affidavit. He did not disclosue the nature of those discussions.
He did say one interesting thing when asked if he would have any advice for young players:
"Don't sign a seven-year contract when you are 23 years old."
