The Giants started the season wondering who would play tight end. They may end it that way.
Tom Coughlin said Jake Ballard will miss some time with a PCL injury he sustained on Sunday against the Redskins, and Bear Pascoe also left the game with a rib injury that could limit him this week. The Giants already had Travis Beckum on the shelf for a week with a chest injury. So who’s left?
No one, really. Except for practice squadder Christian Hopkins. Maybe now would be a good time for Ben Patrick to come out of retirement?
The Giants are also starting to wonder when Osi Umenyiora might be back. Or even IF he’ll be back.
“I’m very concerned,” Coughlin said. “We were hoping we’d have him back. We’re going to take it day to day, but we’d have to have some really major improvement here to be able to say that he could go.”
A source familiar with his ankle injury said it is very doubtful he’ll play against the Jets on Sunday, which would leave only one game left on the regular-season schedule. If the Giants are eliminated on Saturday, I’d give Antrel Rolle-type odds that Osi does not play in a meaningless finale against the Cowboys and he might have played his last game as a Giant.
One good piece of injury information: Despite some scary moments when he was immobilized and carted off the field, Coughlin said Devin Thomas just suffered a stinger and has been cleared to practice and play this week.
