Perry Fewell is teaching the new math.

The Giants defensive coordinator had some fun with numbers when recounting just how many yards his unit gave up to the Lions, and how many they flat out gave them. The stat book shows that Detroit accumulated 417 net yards.

"As we looked at it, from missed assignments, people trying to help and do too much, we probably gave up about 167 [yards]," Fewell said on Thursday. "We could tackle better, that's another 36."

So let's see. Borrow from the tens column, bring down the 2, that's . . . 214 yards allowed.

"We literally gave them about 200-something yards," Jason Pierre-Paul said, obviously buying into the Fewell figures. "We gave them those yards. I feel like, as a defense. I even heard our defensive coordinator say, 'Make them earn their yards.' I'm pretty sure they didn't earn those yards, we gave them to them. Any time you give away yards, you're going to wind up losing the game. We gave them the yards and we lost the game."

On Wednesday, cornerback Walter Thurmond III was saying how the Lions didn't do anything "fancy or special" and that it was Giants breakdowns that led to the big plays such as Calvin Johnson's 67-yard touchdown reception on the Lions' first possession.

It's a familiar refrain for players, the old "It's us, not them" routine. Coaches, though, are generally loath to resort to such fuzzy statistics. Not Fewell. Not this time.

"If we can correct those things there and play better together as a defensive unit and as a secondary, then yes, there are some encouraging things there," he said. "We did a good job, I thought, in the run game. I expected us to force some more turnovers and that's going to be an emphasis and that's always been an emphasis. You can improve from Week 1 to Week 2, and we want to improve from our first outing."

Maybe the numbers will match up this time.
