Rolando McClain will make his first visit to the Giants’ training complex on April 12. Will it be his last? Or will he be driving up to the building for work every day for the next decade or so?
McClain, who is widely considered the top middle linebacker in the draft this spring and who has caught the attention of the Giants – Tom Coughlin said he was impressed by McClain’s Pro Day workout and interview and spoke with Alabama coach Nick Saban about him – told Ralph Vacchiano on Sirius NFL Radio today that he’ll be visiting the Giants. He also noted that he is not averse to playing in a 4-3 system even though he was a 3-4 backer in college.
This doesn't mean that McClain will be landing with the Giants. If they want him badly -- and it's not clear that they do just yet -- they may have to trade up a few spots to get him. There are also a few other players on the first-round radar. And considering how coy the Giants usually are with their first-round targets, bringing him in for an interview may just be some smoke.
McClain also talked about his battle with Crohn’s disease, a condition he’s been dealing with for years but which became public a few weeks ago at his Pro Day. He said he didn’t think any teams would pass him by because of the disease.
“If you look at Crohn’s, it isn’t something that will kill you as long as you take proper medication and have a proper diet,” he said. “Teams are fine with it, especially since I haven’t missed a practice during my entire career.”
The regular-season schedule is still under wraps, but the NFL is releasing its preseason schedule for 2010 on Wednesday afternoon. The Giants typically play the Jets in the third game of the preseason – the Jets will be the home team this year – and they traditionally wrap up against the Patriots, which will be a home game this year if the back-and-forth continues.
As part of the whole coin-toss thing a few weeks ago, the Jets already know they will get the first preseason game at the New Meadowlands. Wonder if the league will see fit to move the Jets-Giants game to Week 1 of the preseason – maybe even a Monday Nighter – for a big kickoff celebration.
Either way, that still leaves the Giants with one road and one home game to fill up their preseason schedule. Any guesses?
