Here’s what Antrel Rolle said about the Giants making the playoffs:
“I don’t think it, I know it,” he said. “That’s because that’s what’s going to happen. I know it’s going to happen ... I have no doubt. I said it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen.”
Problem is, that’s a quote from last year. Dec. 20, to be exact, a few days after the Giants’ crumble against the Eagles. Obviously he was wrong. The Giants did not make the playoffs. They finished 10-6, but they did not make the playoffs.
So here we are again, the Giants having blown a late lead to the Eagles and then looked lifeless the following week. Just like last year. And just like last year, Rolle is ready to punch the team’s ticket for the postseason.
The safety was asked on his weekly spot Tuesday afternoon if he thinks the Giants will be a playoff team when this regular season is over five games from now (and he even did a little Brandon Jacobs and dragged the team's fans into the discussion).
“Absolutely,” he said. “Absolutely, man. Let me tell you something: We’re going to fight. I don’t care how we fight, I don’t care what corner we back ourselves up into. And you know what, everyone might be off the Giants’ bandwagon, which is fine. We’ve only had us from the beginning anyway. We only need us in order to get to where we need to get. If the fans want to be there, then be there. We will love you, we would love to have you, we will definitely appreciate you. But if you’re not there, if you jump off the bandwagon, that’s fine too. We’re gonna play ball regardless. We’re professional football players. We’re the New York Football Giants. We are not going to go out without a fight. We are going to fight and that’s it.”
Just a few minutes earlier, though, Rolle was wondering aloud whether or not the Giants have the desire to get to a 17th game this season.
“I’m a fighter,” he said. “I fought to the end last night and I’m going to fight to the end of the season no matter which road it takes. We have to figure out at the end of the day, what’s our purpose? What are we here for? Are we trying to be a playoff contending team or are we just going out there and going through the motions? At the end of the day I play football for one reason and one reason only and that’s to go to the playoffs each and every year. To go out there and try to be the best player I can be each and every game. And I’m sure my teammates feel the same way. But we’re not showing that right now. We’re not showing that as a team. And like I say, everyone within the Giants organization needs to get together, coaches and players, and figure out what is going on and how do we stop this bleeding at the end of the day. Because, I don’t know, clearly there is something wrong.”
Clearly. The Giants have lost three straight, including a waxing by Drew Brees on national television Monday night. Next comes Aaron Rodgers and the Packers with their shiny undefeated record.
Rolle gave the Packers their due, but he said the Giants can play with them.
“When we want to play ball as a Giants team and when everyone is on the same page meaning players, coaches, everyone else, we play ball,” he said. “That’s what we need to get back to. We need to find a way to get back to that. I don’t know what it’s going to take, I don’t know what has to happen, but we need to find a way to get back to that at the end of the day. That’s who we are. That’s when we play our best ball.”
