The alarm clock in Tom Coughlin's head is ready to start ringing.

"There has to be a little bit of a sense of urgency right now," Coughlin said Tuesday. "We're a couple of weeks away from lining up [for the Sept. 13 opener against the Cowboys]. I'd like to see things done well, done right, whoever it is . . . If it doesn't go the way it's supposed to go, and we've been at this for a couple of weeks, why doesn't it go that way? You have to look hard at that. The practice part of this thing has got to be understood and it's got to be done right and it's got to be done with a sense of urgency."

Coughlin said he is even concerned about Odell Beckham Jr.'s lack of a reception in two preseason games. "You worry about everything," Coughlin said. "You give opportunities and guys make plays and when they don't make plays you analyze why they did or why they didn't and present it. You'd like to see it the other way."

Coughlin chalked Beckham's blank up to a number of issues. "To me, he had a chance for one ball that was thrown out in front of him," he said of the first pass to the receiver in the Jaguars game. "He had a drop [on a sliding attempt]. To me, it's timing, it's rhythm, it's all of those things."

And with the opener just 19 days away, all of those things need to be fixed. Giants out of JPP loop

The Giants learn more about Jason Pierre-Paul through media accounts than they do through direct interactions with the player. So when asked about a report from Monday that Pierre-Paul intends to show up sometime before the start of the season, Coughlin said he had not heard that information from his defensive end.

"I don't know anything about that," Coughlin said. "He hasn't told me."
