It's never over until they're listed as inactive, so, tackle David Diehl and wide receiver Steve Smith presumably still have a chance to play against Washington since they were listed as "doubtful" on Friday's injury report.
Diehl never appeared in the locker room during the media period, but when asked about his progress recovering from hip and hamstring injuries, head coach Tom Coughlin said of Diehl: "He's working. We'll see about the 'ready' part. He's working."
Smith (pictured) did not take part in the Friday afternoon film review the receivers have with quarterback Eli Manning, so, his return from a torn pectoral muscle likely is down the road. Four players who were listed as "out" this week include tackle Shawn Andrews (back), kick returner Don Blackmon (chest), wide receiver Hakeem Nicks (lower leg) and center Shaun O'Hara (foot).
Probables include defensive backs Brian Jackson (hand) and Aaron Ross (back) and defensive end Osi Umenyiora (knee).
Of the players who are out, Nick seems optimistic about returning next week against Minnesota. He said the stitches in his lower left leg are coming out on Sunday, and once that happens, he can start running. "I'm a fast healer," Nicks said before heading off to the showers with a protective sleeve around his leg to prevent infection, which is the primary impediment to his return.
