Bart Scott was one of the Jets' walking wounded last night, one of a handful of players who sat out their 27-7 preseason victory over the hapless Bengals at New Meadowlands Stadium.

The linebacker was injured on the first play of the Jets' preseason opener against the Texans a week ago, rolling his left leg in a pileup. He was held out of practice all week leading up to last night's game, but thinks he'll be back on the field this week.

"We’ll see," Scott told me after the game. "I'll put a little dirt on it, we’ll try it out. It’s fine."

Scott said the Jets are simply being cautious, especially when you factor in the condensed training camp schedule. Just like they did with wideout Plaxico Burress when he was nursing that left ankle sprain, the Jets are playing it smart with Scott.

"No need to push something," Scott said. "There's no need to push it and get hurt. For what?"

Scott said it's all about making sure this thing doesn't linger so he's available for all 16-regular-season games and a possible postseason run.

"Better for 16 and more," Scott said, "than do something silly."
