David Harris really wasn’t joking Tuesday morning, when he said he expected a new long-term deal to be completed soon.
Six hours later it was done.
Harris, the playmaking inside linebacker who was slapped with the franchise tag has inked a new, the Jets just announced. A source told Newsday Harris' deal is for four years, $36 million with $29.5 guaranteed, heftiest guaranteed sum for an inside linebacker in NFL history.
Before the news broke, Harris said he was excited about the prospect of sticking around with the Jets for years to come.
“I’m glad to be here,” he said, “and I want to finish my career here.”
Fellow linebacker Bart Scott was thrilled with the notion of playing alongside Harris for years to come.
“I’m excited,” Scott said. “David exemplifies what being like a Jet is. He’s a hard worker, plays his butt off. I think he is very deserving. You don’t want to let a guy like that get in the open market because there are 31 other teams that would like to have a guy like that – a high-character guy, very good football player.”
