A source confirmed San Diego’s director of player personnel Jimmy Raye III has received permission to interview with the Jets.
But will a meeting actually take place?
Raye was passed over for the Chargers’ GM job in favor of Colts exec Tom Telesco. But Telesco said he welcomes the idea of keeping Raye in-house.
“I absolutely, positively would love him back,” Telesco said, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Chargers president Dean Spanos echoed those same sentiments.
“He knows we want him to stay,” Spanos said of Raye, 42. “It’s up to him. We really want him.”
So do the Jets.
Raye, a former Chargers scout, has made it known he wants to be a GM. According to the Union-Tribune, he was one of four candidates for the Bears’ GM job last January.
Spanos stressed that Raye is GM material – even though he ultimately chose Telesco.
“It was really tough because I have a tremendous amount of respect for Jimmy Raye,” Spanos said. “I’ve worked with him for 16 years. Trust me when I tell you he’s a well-qualified individual to become a general manager in the National Fooball League. He will at some point in time.”
