FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Muhammad Wilkerson is officially back.
The Jets activated the defensive end from the active/PUP list before Tuesday’s practice. Though he was limited to individual and position drills, Wilkerson was just happy to be back on the field. “I’m glad to be off the PUP list,” said the lineman, who broke his right fibula in the Jets’ 22-17 Week 17 loss in Buffalo. “ . . . We’re just taking it slow. I feel good.”
According to coach Todd Bowles, Wilkerson is expected to play in Thursday night’s preseason opener against Jacksonville. For now. “We’ll see how many plays we may give him or may not give him,” he said of Wilkerson, who signed a five-year, $86-million extension last month after leading the team with 12 sacks. “He may or may not play. He’s in pads. We’re going to see what he does [Wednesday]. We’re going to let him run around a little bit. If we can steal a rep or two, we’ll play him and if not we’ll sit him out.”
Wilkerson, however, hadn’t yet been told that he might play.
“I appreciate that news. I didn’t hear that,” he said.
Curb the beard
Ryan Fitzpatrick just might heed Larry David’s advice. Told that the “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” creator wants him to shave his bushy beard, the Jets quarterback laughed and said: “I heard he’s a pretty big Jets fan, but I’m probably a bigger “Seinfeld” fan, so I don’t take that lightly. I will take that into consideration, Larry. And I respect you very much.”
Matt Forte (hamstring) did not practice again. “There’s probably a timetable but it’s definitely nowhere right now,” Bowles said of the running back’s return. “We haven’t even played a game yet . . . Matt’s a pro. He’s been doing this for a long time. We trust that he’s going to have himself in shape.” . . . LG James Carpenter (sore leg) also didn’t practice, along with CB Dexter McDougle and RB Bernard Pierce (hamstrings), LB Trevor Reilly (leg) and S Ronald Martin and TE Wes Saxton (unspecified) . . . RT Breno Giacomini (back) and WR Devin Smith (ACL) are still on PUP.
