The NFL sure has a flair for the dramatics.
The Jets will open up the 2013 regular season against Tampa Bay – and possibly, Darrelle Revis – according to USA TODAY Sports.
Both teams have had ongoing trade talks involving the former All-Pro cornerback, who currently is rehabbing from reconstructive knee surgery. The Jets reportedly are seeking the Bucs’ 13th overall pick, in addition to third- and fifth-round selections, in next week’s NFL draft, beginning April 25. Should Tampa Bay choose to pull the trigger on the deal, all eyes will be fixed on MetLife Stadium for Revis’ Week 1 return. to New Jersey.
During a pre-draft conference call with reporters Thursday, NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said he would not trade Revis if he were the Jets.
“End of story,” Mayock said. “I'm going to find a way to make it work. I think sometimes we get too carried away with all these draft picks and I'm sitting there saying, 'Man, corner is a position of need. They're hard to find.'
“This is the best corner in football, and he's going to be one of the best of all-time, and he's 27 years old. If I'm New York, I'm not going there.”
When healthy, Revis is the gold-standard for shutdown corners – and that’s precisely why the Bucs want him. Speaking from Tampa Bay’s point of view, Mayock said: “I'm giving up (No.) 13 to get him, and I'm also talking about some of those other picks. ... My perspective from Tampa, man, I'm all over trying to get Darrelle Revis.”
