FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders have grabbed hold of 1,137 passes between them in their NFL careers. The Jets won’t have Trumaine Johnson out there Sunday at MetLife Stadium to try to prevent the two Denver receivers from adding to their numbers.

The $72.5-million newcomer at cornerback suffered a quad strain in practice Thursday. Johnson sat out Friday and was ruled out for the game. The Jets will see how he feels after that.

“Any time you lose a starter, it’s a big deal,” coach Todd Bowles said. “But we have guys that played over the past couple of years that we like in [Darryl] Roberts and Buster [Skrine] and [Parry] Nickerson as well as [Juston] Burris … Next guy up.”

Morris Claiborne has been starting opposite Johnson, with Skrine as the nickel corner. Asked if Claiborne and Skrine will be the outside corners, Bowles said, “We’ll toy around a little bit and reveal it on Sunday.”

Skrine missed practice Friday because of what Bowles called “an emergency,” but Bowles expects him to play. One possibility is for Skrine to start outside and move inside in passing situations, with fourth corner Roberts taking over outside.

Roberts made his first interception of the season in last Sunday’s 31-12 loss at Jacksonville.

“I had a solid week of practice,” the fourth-year pro said. “… So if I do get to go on Sunday, I’ll be ready for my opportunity to play.”

Linebacker Jordan Jenkins didn’t sound worried about Johnson’s absence.

“I feel like it’s not going to change much,” Jenkins said. “I mean, Tru is a hell of a player, yes. But the next man up in that room, they already know what the expectation is.”

The Jets (1-3) need to hang a U-turn. Blake Bortles just threw for 388 yards against them. Johnson was beaten for a 67-yard TD pass in their third straight loss.

“Just because we had a couple rough games, of course we want to get back on track,” Roberts said. “So we’re going to start with Denver.”

Notes & quotes. The Jets claimed LB Tarell Basham from Indianapolis and waived DL Bronson Kaufusi. ... WR ArDarius Stewart, a 2017 third-round pick, was released from the practice squad with an injury settlement. … TE Neal Sterling (concussion) and WR/special teamer Charone Peake (hamstring) are out and S Marcus Maye (ankle/foot) is questionable.
