Rex Ryan's wallet just got a bit lighter.

The Jets today have fined their coach $50,000 for his obscene gesture at a Mixed Martial Arts event in Miami on Saturday night. Ryan was photographed giving Miami resident David M. Hildenbrand the middle finger, something that didn't sit well with the organization.

General manager Mike Tannenbaum strongly admonished Ryan's conduct in a statement Sunday, saying it was inappropriate and showed poor judgment. He added the matter would be handled internally, and the Jets chose to take action two days later.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello has said the NFL is looking into the incident, but there's a possibility the league may choose not to also fine Ryan given the team leaping into action first. Titans owner Bud Adams was fined $250,000 for making a similar obscene gesture toward a Buffalo fan during a Titans' game against the Bills in Nashville in November.

Ryan, who riled up Dolphins fans during a live television interview with Strikefore that broadcast throughout the arena, was apologetic Sunday.

“It was stupid and inappropriate,” he said in Sunday's statement. “I wouldn't accept that type of behavior from one of the coaches or players and it's unacceptable from me. I apologize to the Jets organization, the National Football League and NFL fans everywhere.”
