The Jets announced they’ve tendered nine players, all of whom would be restricted free agents under the current collective bargaining agreement, set to expire at 11:59 p.m. Thursday.
WR Santonio Holmes and CB Antonio Cromartie each received the highest tender, getting hit with a first- and third-round level. That means if the rules remain the same whenever a new CBA is set in place, a team must give up first- and third-round draft picks if they sign Holmes or Cromartie, and the Jets don't match the offer.
No one, of course, has any clue what the new system will look like, so the Jets are basically just covering their bases.
The rest of the tenders: KR/WR Brad Smith (second), QB Kellen Clemens (third), S Eric Smith (third), K Nick Folk (sixth), and CB Drew Coleman (sixth). S James Ihedigbo and C Rob Turner were given the right of refusal tenders.
*-- The Jets also officially announced they’ve released RT Damien Woody, NT Kris Jenkins and LB Jason Taylor, as was reported yesterday. Still nothing official from the team on LB Vernon Gholston's impending exit, however.
*-- LB David Harris signed his franchise tender yesterday guaranteeing him a 2011 salary in the neighborhood just north of $10 million.
